General

Where did the name North Oak Apothecary come from?

I grew up on a street named North Oak in a very small town in Indiana. That street built my foundation, I played hide & seek there, rode my bike everywhere, dug for worms for fishing, climbed trees and learned to love the outdoors. It just seemed fitting to build my business based upon my roots.

Are your products Vegan?

I do use Lanolin, Sheep wool fat, Beeswax & Goatmilk in some products. These are not considered true Vegan. However, if the product is Vegan, it will be designated on the boxes or labels.

Why do you use lye in your soap?

The short answer would be that without lye you would have body butter. On the label is designated as Sodium Hydroxide.
Lye binds to the oil molecules, this chemical reaction creates soap, however, there is no lye remaining in any bar of soap. The soaps are cured for a minimum of 4-6 weeks assuring a nice hard, long-lasting bar of soap. What is remaining is a luscious bubble rich bar.

Why am I choosing handmade soap?

Handmade soap is gentler on your skin. I Superfat (increase the oils) in my recipes. This increases the amount of moisturizing oils and butters you have in any bar. I try to use only natural coloring, clays, charcoals, herbs & plants in my soaps. However, I cannot dismiss the beauty Mica adds to a mixture. My soaps are made in small batches which gives us the opportunity to assure quality and freshness in each bar. Industrial made soaps are made in the thousands at a time using synthetic detergents, stabilizers, fragrances which can be harsh to your skin.

How can I make my soap last longer?

After using your soap, place on a soap saver. This will help your soap last longer. But, realistically, Handmade soaps last just as long as a “store” bar.
